For Trade Unions and Workplace Reps

Fertility Treatment at Work, Through a Rep's Eyes

For union officers, health and safety reps, equality reps and ESG leads. Clinician-authored information that turns "it's unpredictable" into a stage-by-stage picture your members and their employers can plan around.

    Why Reps

    Why This Belongs With Reps

Three reasons the people who represent workers are the right people to hold this.

    Members Are Negotiating Alone

Most people in treatment renegotiate every scan, every results call and every recovery day with their line manager, one at a time. The toolkit gives them the words, and a written summary they control.

    "Unpredictable" Is Not Good Enough

Treatment is a series of stages, and each stage has a known shape: how many appointments, how much notice, what the body is doing. When it is written down stage by stage, an employer can plan instead of shrug.

Health and Safety Is Already Your Ground

Sedation, abdominal surgery, manual handling limits, hot flushes from medication, and ovarian hyperstimulation are health and safety questions. Reps handle these every day. Fertility treatment simply has not been named.

    ESG

What ESG Has to Do With It

ESG stands for Environmental, Social and Governance. It is the framework boards and investors use to judge how an organisation treats people and the planet. Fertility support is a social measure with a data trail.

    • Fertility support sits in the S of ESG: workforce wellbeing, equality, and keeping skilled people in work
    • From spring 2027, UK employers with 250 or more staff publish Equality Action Plans covering the gender pay gap and menopause; fertility is a voluntary extension
    • A written policy is only credible when the support can be shown to reach people, and that means grouped, anonymous data
    • Reps can ask for those numbers without anyone's private information being exposed

    What You Get

What Members, Reps and Employers Get

    Your Members

    • Stage-by-stage guides written by a GP with a Diploma in Occupational Medicine
    • A wellbeing check-in they keep private, using two short validated measures
    • A GP summary they take to their own GP
    • A manager brief with one switch: name fertility treatment, or keep it a generic medical request
    • An occupational health referral template

    Reps and Employers

    • The occupational health guidance: case assessment by treatment stage, with adjustment wording
    • The phase reference sheet: stage, typical duration, appointment pattern, functional picture, first adjustments
    • Anonymised group patterns above the anonymity threshold, never an individual response
    • Plain-English pages on the Equality Act, time off, and what a fertility policy needs

    Scoping

    How Scoping a Pilot Works

Three steps, no cost to explore, nothing sent to your members until you say so.

    1. Step 1

      Review

Your reps and, where you have them, your occupational health contacts read the OH guidance and try the tools with sample content. No account needed.
    2. Step 2

      Map

Together we list the treatment stages your members are most likely to hit, what the workplace already offers at each one, and where the gaps are. The phase reference sheet is the starting table.
    3. Step 3

      Pilot

Members join with an access code. A grouped, anonymous report appears once enough people have checked in. Where a research partner is involved, the check-in measures become the evaluation.
