Overview
Fertility treatment (for example IVF, IUI, stimulation, egg freezing, or embryo transfer) usually means a lot of hospital visits during the working week. People may also feel physical effects from medication or stress while they wait for results.
Around 1 in 6 people experience fertility challenges at some point in their lives, and most of those who go through treatment are employed.
The HR and line manager role is not to run someone's treatment. It is to understand in broad terms what the journey can involve, make reasonable adjustments where you can, and avoid penalising people for clinic visits or short-term effects that often go with treatment.
Most employees do not disclose: published evidence (CIPD, 2023) suggests 47% do not tell their manager or HR.
